Six tons on film - FENTON

Six tons on film - FENTON
This collection of archive films and interviews from Staffordshire Film Archive represents the best examples of Stoke captured on film from 1940 to the 1970s. We begin with the City’s Jubilee celebrations of 1960 and a local man puts the case for each town retaining its identity. Behind-the-scenes filming on the Clayhanger film set introduces the issue of why Arnold Bennett left out Fenton when he called the Potteries the Five Towns. We see Digging for Victory in 1941 in Fenton Park and local allotments, and see VE Day street parties in 1945. We see 1940s scenes at Shelley and Crown Staffordshire potteries. Reclamation scenes in the 1960s are shown, and the removal of Berry Hill pit tip in record time the pit still burning while the huge machines scraped it away. MP Bob Cant sets the scene for the building and opening of the Sixth Form College and we end with local comment in Fenton from the 1970s.
