This collection of archive films and interviews from Staffordshire Film Archive represents the best examples of Stoke captured on film from 1900 to the 1970s. We begin with the City’s Jubilee celebrations of 1960 and see film of the town centre. We see the earliest film from 1901 railway workers hear and see the locomotive works and North Staffordshire Railway around 1910. Stoke station is seen in the days of steam, and Santa arrives on a train in 1922. There is film of Ging George V’s visit in 1925 the day he declared Stoke a City then we see him at the Infirmary at Hartshill. There are town centre scenes in 1926, George Barber as Lord Mayor in 1930 and we see the Michelin, Stanley Matthews at Stoke City, and pottery processes at Spode in 1930. After Digging for Victory in 1941 we look at cinemas in Stoke – the Majestic, Danilo, Hippodrome and Kosy. We see film of Stanley Matthew’s farewell match at Stoke City in 1965 and the team returning with the League Cup in 1972, then conclude with local comments and film from the 1970s.
